Newly Revised National Standards For Physical Education
Released
Reflecting the most current research and theory about physical
education, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE)
released a newly revised second edition of Moving into the Future:
National Standards for Physical Education. An essential tool for
developing, implementing and evaluating K-12 school physical education
programs, the national standards clearly identify what students should
know and be able to do as a result of a quality physical education
program. The six national content standards are as follows:
-
Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed
to perform a variety of physical activities.
-
Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles,
strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and
performance of physical activities.
-
Participates regularly in physical activity
-
Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness
-
Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self
and others in physical activity settings
-
Values physical activity for
health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social
interaction.
Why do we need national
physical education standards?
-
Standards provide the
framework for a quality physical education program
-
National standards provide
guidance for developing state and local standards
-
Standards increase the
professional stature of physical education
