The National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Teacher of the Year Awards (TOY) are given to teachers who are members of both MAHPERD and AAHPERD and who demonstrate exemplary teaching abilities in respective grade levels and disciplines.
Teachers selected for these awards may also have their names submitted for recognition at Central District AAHPERD. Central District AAHPERD then forwards its awardees on for a possible recognition at the National AAHPERD Convention.
Criteria for all NASPE TOY Programs (Adapted Physical Education, Aquatics, and Elementary, Middle School or High School)
- Current membership in NASPE/AAHPERD
- Degree in and certification (respective state license) as a physical education teacher
- Minimum of five years teaching experience in physical education
- Full-time teaching contract, current at the time of nomination and selection
- Minimum of 60% of total teaching responsibility is teaching physical education classes
- Conducts a quality physical education program as reflected in NASPE standards and guidelines for K-12 Physical Education program
Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year
The purpose of this award is to honor and recognize the outstanding services and contributions in adapted physical education by a Minnesota school teacher who is a also a member of AAHPERD.
Aquatics Teacher of the Year
The purpose of this award is to honor and recognize the outstanding services and contributions in aquatics by a Minnesota school teacher who is a also a member of AAHPERD.
Elementary School Physical Education Teacher of the Year (Application Materials)
The purpose of this award is to honor and recognize the outstanding services and contributions in elementary school education by a Minnesota elementary school teacher who is a also a member of AAHPERD.
Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year (Application Materials)
The purpose of this award is to honor and recognize the outstanding services and contribution in middle school education by a Minnesota middle school teacher who is also a member of AAHPERD.
Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year (Application Materials)
The purpose of this award is to honor and recognize the outstanding services and contributions in secondary school education by a Minnesota secondary school teacher who is also a member of AAHPERD.
