Lessons Learned From ISD 728 PE Staff - Matt Johnson, Hassan Elementary - Rogers

As some of you have been aware, ISD 728 just approved major reductions in PE and Health for next school year. I want to share our story in the hope of saving other schools from going through the same cuts in the future. My name is Matt Johnson and I’m a Physical Education Teacher at Hassan Elementary in Rogers, Minnesota (ISD 728). I am currently teaching in my ninth year and feel we have a solid PE program. We design our curriculum for every child to be active during Physical Education class. Our students learn lifelong skills that will help shape their future.

Minnesota is very proud of the great educators we have working with our children and young professionals. The passion, the leadership, the excellence demonstrated by our teachers is a true inspiration of our profession. Please join the MNAHPERD BOD in congratulating these three individuals that will receive recognition in St. Louis, April 1-5 at the Central District/National AAHPERD Convention. President's Welcome

I am honored to lead our organization during 2014! We have a wealth of knowledge, experience, passion, and energy on our Board of Directors as well as thousands of health/physical educators (HPE) and developmental adapted physical educators (DAPE) across the state that all can work together to focus on the health and well-being of our school-age children.

We still have a lot to do in our profession to ensure that the students of Minnesota have access to knowledge and opportunities to learn (and practice) positive health and physical education behaviors/skills. As Dr. Jane Greenberg (2013 conference keynote speaker) noted, this generation’s children will live 5 years LESS than their parents! It MUST be our mission as HPE/DAPE educators in Minnesota to give them these 5 years back and much, much MORE!

My goals for this year include increasing membership, especially future professionals – as they are our future! I am also focused on increasing our regional workshops – getting ‘good stuff’ out to teachers in their own backyard. This is especially important for those teachers who are unable to attend the fall conference and for teachers to have options DURING the year to get rejuvenated! Finally, I am excited about our fall 2014 conference and putting together yet ANOTHER great conference for the HPE/DAPE teachers in the state!

Here is to a GREAT 2014 – email me ( ) with ANY suggestions, questions, or concerns regarding our organization! Looking forward to seeing you at a regional workshop and the fall conference November 3-4 at Wayzata High School!

Join the MOVEment! Ensure that your school provides a comprehensive school physical activity program with quality physical education as the foundation. Our youth needs knowledge, skills, and confidence to be physically active for a lifetime.
